Alodine (aluminum chromate) treatment is a chemical conversion treatment that imparts corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and paint adhesion to the surface of aluminum and aluminum alloys. A particularly significant feature is its ability to maintain electrical conductivity, which is lost in anodic oxidation (anodizing). By immersing the material in a treatment solution, a very thin oxide film is formed on the metal surface. This film not only provides excellent corrosion resistance but also improves the adhesion of paints and adhesives, making it widely used as a base for painting. Typical applications include electronic components, aerospace parts, and automotive parts. To comply with environmental regulations, there is a shift towards trivalent chromium-based treatments that do not use harmful hexavalent chromium.
