CV BOOTS & STEERING RACK BOOTS
Constant Velocity (CV) boots or draft shaft boots are boots that 'cover' the CV joints of your vehicle. These CV joints are mostly found on the front axles or drive shafts of your vehicle, although sometimes they can also be found on the rear axle joints too.
There are ‘outer’ CV boots (the boot closest to the wheel) and ‘inner’ CV boots (the boot closest to the transmission). Typically, outer CV boots experience more action than the inner boot, which is why they tend to fail more quickly and need to be replaced more frequently.
CV boots maintain optimal lubrication of the critical CV joint and protects it from contamination by dirt, stones, and water by basically acting as a ‘cover’. At the same time, they allow for the free moment of the CV joint. The CV joint itself is a critical and very expensive component that affects steering and suspension, so it is always important to change a relatively inexpensive CV boot immediately before your CV joint is affected.
Steering rack boots or steering gear boots essentially perform the same function of CV boots - except that they perform it for the steering rack instead of the CV joint. There are two steering rack boots on a steering rack, one on either end. As with CV boots, their main function is to keep dirt, stones, and water away from the inside of the steering rack by acting as a ‘cover’.
It is important for you to know the quality and trust the manufacturer of the CV boot and steering rack boot you are buying. Unfortunately, many other aftermarket manufacturers are not using the correct rubber material in manufacturing these boots. Their boots will react and expand considerably when they come into contact with the greases and oils that are necessary to lubricate the CV joint, ultimately failing very quickly.
As with all our parts, Mchanix uses high quality materials such as our special synthetic rubber formula to manufacture premium quality CV and steering rack boots that protect your critical CV joint and steering rack, to support great driving comfort and vehicle safety.
