■ No Overseas Shipping Required: Refurbishing Large Plating Electrodes Locally in Thailand

In continuous electroplating lines operated by steelmakers, maintaining discharging surface smoothness and dimensional precision is vital for executing uniform plating on wide steel sheets (coils exceeding 1m in width and weighing 9 to 12 tons). Over long periods of operation, lead anodes wear down as their surfaces convert into lead dioxide ($PbO_2$). Traditionally, performing maintenance on such massive electrodes required returning them to Japan, resulting in prolonged lead times and significant round-trip shipping costs.

SPF (THAILAND) CO., LTD. maintains dedicated casting and machining equipment at its Chonburi plant in Thailand, offering an integrated local service from pickup and discharge surface regeneration to inspection and final delivery. This domestic setup reduces total maintenance costs to approximately 60% to 70% of the cost of returning items to Japan. Compared with purchasing new anodes, local refurbishment cuts expenses by about 50%.

By utilizing our production and maintenance base in Thailand, we eliminate the risk of product damage during long-distance transit. We also align our turnaround times with customers' regular maintenance cycles, allowing them to lower their backup anode inventory requirements.

■ Refurbishing Specifications and Criteria for Lead & Tin Plating Anodes

Minimum Allowable Lead Thickness

7 to 8 mm (falling below this increases the risk of iron core exposure)

Recommended Timing for Repair

When remaining lead thickness reaches 8 to 10 mm (prior to core exposure)

Coil Processing Specifications

Electrode sizes compatible with continuous sheets of ~0.3 mm thickness (0.2–0.35 mm) and widths >1 m

Factory Location & Specs

Processed at SPF (THAILAND) CO., LTD. Chonburi Plant (722 sqm area, 44.5 million baht registered capital)

Note: If the lead portion is completely worn down and the internal steel core becomes exposed, the steel will dissolve due to the plating solution, rendering the electrode non-functional. This will lead to plating defects on products such as steel sheets, drastically increase repair costs, or even make repairs impossible. Therefore, we highly recommend planning a scheduled collection and repair when the remaining lead thickness is at 8–10 mm.

■ Monolithic "Interface-Free" Cladding and Thorough Non-Destructive Testing

Under standard lead cladding processes performed by local fabricators, pouring lead in multiple stages often creates "interfaces" (mille-feuille-like discontinuous layers) within the lead. Plating acids can gradually penetrate these interfaces during operation, corroding the joints between the copper and iron from the inside. This often results in shortened lifespans and sudden electrical connection failures.

At SPF (THAILAND) CO., LTD., our specialized cladding technique properly melts the surface of the underlying lead layer as new lead is cast, merging them into a single structure. This monolithic cladding layer prevents acid penetration, eliminating the formation of internal corrosion, pinholes, and cracks to extend the service life of the electrode.

To guarantee the quality of regenerated electrodes, we subject every unit to the following

testing procedures:

  1. Visual inspection for pinholes post-machining.
  2. High-precision measurement of remaining lead thickness using ultrasonic thickness gauges.
  3. 100% dye penetrant testing (PT / Color Check) to check for surface defects.

We deliver every product with these measurement records and inspection reports attached, minimizing the risk of operational failures and replicating the electrical conductivity and
durability of brand-new anodes.

■ Duty Drawback Repair Model Covering the ASEAN Region (Vietnam, Malaysia, etc.)

For steel manufacturers operating in ASEAN countries outside Thailand, such as Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia, exporting used large electrodes for maintenance and re-importing them has been hindered by complex customs clearance procedures and double taxation. Furthermore, for companies operating within Thailand, disposing of imported electrodes under Board of Investment (BOI) privileges requires significant administrative effort.

SPF (THAILAND) CO., LTD. has established an ASEAN-wide repair scheme utilizing temporary import and re-export procedures (duty drawback/guarantee refund systems). This allows used anodes to enter our Chonburi factory for refurbishing and return to their origin country without incurring double customs duties.

For steel plants in Malaysia and Vietnam, this provides a regional repair hub that cuts down transit times and shipping costs compared to shipping back to Japan. It enables customers to maintain their valuable electrode assets at an optimized cost throughout their operational life cycles.

■ Problem Analysis and Replacement Proposals for Third-Party Electrodes

Many lead anodes produced by other local manufacturers exhibit early degradation or sudden failures during operation, such as frequent conduction issues, premature peeling of FRP linings, or solution penetration through pinholes that corrodes the inner copper bars. These issues are typically caused by minor design flaws in dissimilar metal joints or inadequate cladding techniques.

In addition to custom design and fabrication of new anodes, SPF (THAILAND) CO., LTD. provides technical investigation and analysis services for third-party electrodes experiencing issues. We evaluate the specific setup of your plating tanks, inter-electrode distances, and the chemical properties of the plating bath (such as transitions to low-environmental-impact solutions) to propose optimized electrode specifications.

By reclaiming worn electrodes and rebuilding both the discharging surfaces and FRP linings to like-new standards, we help you improve production efficiency and lower maintenance costs without requiring major capital investments in new equipment.

■ FAQ

Q1. When is the best timing (remaining thickness) to send anodes for repair?
A1. We recommend collecting the units for refurbishment when the remaining lead thickness is at 8–10 mm. If the thickness drops to 7–8 mm or less, there is an increased risk that the internal steel core will become exposed and dissolve into the plating solution. This disrupts the chemical balance of the solution and leads to plating defects, while potentially causing exorbitant repair costs or making the units completely unrepairable.

Q2. Can you repair third-party electrodes experiencing internal corrosion due to acid penetration?
A2. Yes. We analyze the failure and rebuild the anode utilizing our proprietary monolithic "interface-free" cladding technology to eliminate the penetration risks common in third-party products.

Q3. Can overseas customers (e.g., Vietnam or Malaysia) avoid double customs duties? A3. Yes. Our duty drawback/guarantee refund system (temporary import/re-export scheme) prevents double taxation, reducing overall costs to approximately 70% to 80% compared to shipping back to Japan.

Q4. How is the quality of the refurbished discharging surfaces guaranteed?
A4. Every unit undergoes a visual pinhole check, ultrasonic thickness measurement, and 100% dye penetrant testing (PT / Color Check). All inspection data is compiled into a quality report delivered with the product.
