Hot Rolled Steel Strip|Reduce Warping and Extend Die Life

In the manufacturing field for molds, dies, and machine components, variations in the hardness of steel plates and warping during processing are major challenges. In particular, with general hot-rolled steel plates, mechanical properties are often not sufficiently controlled. As a result, issues such as reduced mold accuracy, shortened service life, and increased costs due to reprocessing can occur.

Root Cause: Residual Stress and Uneven Temperature Control

In general hot-rolled steel, temperature control during rolling is often insufficient. As a result, residual stress develops inside the material, causing an uneven metal structure. Furthermore, if proper normalizing treatment is not performed, hardness becomes unstable, making warping and cracking more likely during quenching or machining.

Solution: Hot-Rolled Steel Plates

Yamaichi Special Steel (Thailand) uses carefully selected, high-quality hot-rolled steel from steel manufacturers in Japan and conducts thorough inspection and management under an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system. By minimizing variations in hardness, plate thickness, and flatness, we provide materials that maintain stable precision with minimal warping, even after quenching or machining.

Main Steel Grades and Features

1. SK85AY – High-Carbon Steel High strength and excellent wear resistance

  • Carbon content: 0.80–0.90%
  • Hardness range: HRB 90–100
  • Features a dense and uniform microstructure, making it ideal for quenching and tempering
  • Provides excellent wear resistance and impact resistance
  • Main applications: punching dies, blades, springs

2. S60CAY – Medium-Carbon Steel A balance of toughness and machinability

  • Carbon content: 0.55–0.65%
  • Hardness range: HRB 85–95
  • Offers an excellent balance of strength and toughness, with minimal dimensional change after heat treatment
  • Easy to machine, turn, and quench
  • Main applications: machine structural parts, shafts, fastening plates

Glossary

  • Residual Stress: Internal stress generated during rolling or cooling processes. It can cause warping or distortion during heat treatment.
  • Normalizing: A heat treatment process that homogenizes the structure and stabilizes mechanical properties.
  • Heat Treatment: A process that controls heating and cooling to improve the hardness, strength, and toughness of steel materials.
