Naturally derived, multifunctional ingredient with high antibacterial power | Hinokitiol

About Hinoki Oil "Hinokitiol"

Hinokitiol is a naturally derived component found in the essential oils of trees such as Taiwanese Hinoki and Aomori Hiba, known for its powerful and broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal properties.
It possesses high physiological activity derived from its unique tropolone ring structure and is effective even at low concentrations, making it widely adopted in cosmetics, toiletries, hygiene products, and various industrial applications.
As a high-value-added ingredient that can simultaneously appeal to "natural," "safety," and "functionality," it has been attracting increasing attention in recent years.

Basic Information

  • Chemical Name: 2-Hydroxy-6-isopropylcyclohepta-2,4,6-trien-1-one
  • Alias: β-Thujaplicin
  • Chemical Formula: C₁₀H₁₂O₂

  • Solubility: Soluble in alcohol, sparingly soluble in water

Key Features

1. Broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity

Hinokitiol is effective against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi (molds and yeasts), and a significant feature is its action against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Antibacterial activity against E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida, and athlete's foot fungi has been reported.

2. High efficacy at low concentrations

Since it exhibits antibacterial properties even at relatively low concentrations, it offers high flexibility in formulation design and allows for easier reduction of usage compared to other preservatives and antibacterial agents.

3. Natural origin, low irritation

As a plant-derived ingredient, it is highly regarded for its safety and image, making it suitable for products that require a "natural" or "plant-derived" appeal. Low toxicity is also a characteristic.

4. Anti-inflammatory, deodorizing, and insect repellent effects

In addition to its antibacterial properties, anti-inflammatory, deodorizing, and insect/mite repellent effects have also been reported, leading to its application as a multi-functional material.
