Features of Sooner Cutting Tools
Sooner is a cutting tool manufacturer based in Luoyang, China, specializing in the development and production of PCD, PCBN, and carbide cutting tools.
Since its establishment in December 2006, the company has developed and manufactured cutting tools for turning, drilling, milling, boring, reaming, and other machining processes.
In addition to standard tools, Sooner can provide custom tools based on workpiece drawings and machining conditions. Its capabilities extend from individual tool supply to proposals for improving the overall machining process.
Manufacturing and Quality Control
Sooner operates a manufacturing facility of approximately 1,350 m² with an annual production capacity of around 100,000 tools.
Materials from suppliers such as Element Six and GE are used for PCD and PCBN tools, while equipment from WALTER, WAIDA, ZOLLER, and other manufacturers is used for tool production and inspection.
Insert dimensions and cutting-edge accuracy are digitally inspected for every tool. For PCD and PCBN tools, vacuum brazing is used to ensure strong cutting-edge bonding and help reduce chipping or delamination during machining.
Sooner also holds utility model patents related to tool structures and grinding control and develops cutting-edge treatments for difficult-to-machine materials, as well as multi-edge and combination tools.
PCD, PCBN, and Carbide Tool Lineup
- PCD Tools
PCD tools are suitable for machining aluminum, copper and copper alloys, graphite, other non-ferrous metals, and non-metallic materials.
Their high wear resistance makes them suitable for applications requiring stable dimensional accuracy and consistent surface quality.
The lineup includes turning inserts, end mills, milling tools, and boring tools.
- PCBN Tools
PCBN tools are used for machining high-hardness materials such as hardened steel and high-hardness cast iron.
Turning inserts and other tools can be selected according to the workpiece material, hardness, required accuracy, and machining conditions.
- Carbide Drills and Reamers
A wide range of carbide drills is available for applications from general steels to stainless steel and difficult-to-machine materials.
In addition to standard drills, Sooner supports step drills, center drills, deep-hole drills, and carbide reamers.
- Carbide End Mills and Milling Tools
The product range supports a wide variety of workpiece materials, including carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, copper alloys, and hardened steel.
Tool geometries include square, ball nose, and corner-radius types. Suitable series can be selected for face milling, shoulder milling, slotting, contouring, and high-feed machining.
Depending on the tool series and workpiece material, coating options such as TiAlSiN, AlCrSiN, and TiAlN are also available.
- Inserts and Threading Tools
In addition to various turning and milling inserts, the lineup includes cutting taps, forming taps, and thread mills.
Tool geometry, grade, and cutting-edge specifications can be selected according to the workpiece material and machining method.
For detailed information on models, dimensions, applicable materials, and recommended cutting conditions, please refer to the attached catalog.
Main Workpiece Materials and Applications
Sooner cutting tools are used across a wide range of manufacturing industries, including automotive and automotive parts, precision machinery, hydraulic equipment, motorcycles, aircraft components, construction machinery, molds and dies, and graphite machining.
Applications include machining automotive engine components, brake discs, bearings, hydraulic valves, aluminum alloys, graphite, hardened steel, high-hardness cast iron, ceramics, and other precision parts.
Dry machining can also be supported for certain applications depending on the machining process and tool type.
Custom Tools and Machining Process Improvement
- Custom and Combination Cutting Tools
Based on workpiece drawings and machining requirements, Sooner can design and manufacture step drills, reamers, special milling tools, boring tools, and combination tools.
By integrating multiple machining steps into a single tool, it is possible to reduce the number of tool changes and machining operations, helping shorten cycle time.
- Replacement of Existing Tool Brands
Sooner can review the brand, model, actual tool, drawing, and machining conditions of currently used tools and propose suitable replacement tools.
There is experience in replacing European, American, and Japanese-brand tools. Alternative tools can also be considered based on the current brand name and part number, followed by sample production and quotation.
- Machining Process Improvement
Support is not limited to direct replacement of existing tools. Depending on issues such as machining defects, tool life, machining accuracy, cycle time, and tooling cost, cutting-edge geometry, tool structure, and machining processes can also be reviewed.
Tool specifications can be adjusted based on actual machining results.
- Regrinding and Cutting-Edge Restoration
Regrinding and cutting-edge restoration services are available depending on the type and wear condition of used tools.
Properly restoring reusable tools can help reduce the frequency of purchasing new tools and lower overall cutting tool costs.
Track Record in China
Sooner has built a track record of supplying cutting tools to Japanese and other foreign manufacturers in China.
For many years, the company has supported the replacement of imported tools, including Japanese-made products, with tools manufactured in China. Its scope has expanded from producing replacement tools to providing proposals that also cover machining processes and tool specifications.
In China, Sooner has business experience with Japanese companies such as Dongfeng Honda, GAC Honda, and Daikin, and has also developed and supplied tools for Japanese customers including Toyota and Honda.
In addition to tooling cost reduction, replacement projects can also focus on improving supply stability, machining quality, and tool life.
Sales and Technical Support in Thailand
Hose Master (Thailand) is the authorized distributor of Sooner cutting tools in Thailand and provides support from product sales and tool selection to prototyping, custom tools, and machining process improvement.
- Test Tools and Prototypes
Test tools and prototypes can be manufactured after reviewing the tools currently in use and the machining conditions.
If customers provide a sample of the tool to be replaced together with machining conditions, prototypes can typically be prepared in approximately three weeks.
- New Production Lines and Process Improvement
For new production lines or new workpieces, machining processes and suitable tools can be reviewed based on workpiece material, geometry, required accuracy, and cycle time.
For existing production lines, customers can also consult on issues such as machining defects, tool life, cycle time, and tooling cost.
- Support in Japanese, Thai, English, and Chinese
Hose Master (Thailand) has Japanese staff and Thai engineers who can provide support in Japanese, Thai, English, and Chinese.
The team works together with Sooner to support customers from tool selection and testing to custom tool development and machining process improvement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Can we replace the Japanese, European, or American tools we are currently using?
A1. Yes. The current tool brand, model, actual tool, drawing, and machining conditions can be reviewed to propose a suitable replacement tool.
If there are machining-related issues, improvements to tool geometry or the machining process can also be considered rather than simply replacing the existing tool with an equivalent product.
Q2. Can test tools be produced before purchase?
A2. Yes. Test tools or prototypes can be produced after reviewing the target tool and machining conditions.
Prototypes can typically be prepared in approximately three weeks.
Q3. Can special tools that are not listed in the standard catalog be manufactured?
A3. Yes. Step drills, reamers, special milling tools, boring tools, and combination tools can be designed and manufactured according to workpiece drawings and machining conditions.
Q4. Can multiple machining processes be combined into a single tool?
A4. Yes. Combination tools can be designed according to the machining requirements. By reducing the number of machining operations and tool changes, shorter cycle times can be considered.
Q5. How should PCD and PCBN be selected?
A5. PCD is mainly suitable for aluminum, copper and copper alloys, graphite, other non-ferrous metals, and non-metallic materials.
PCBN is used for high-hardness materials such as hardened steel and high-hardness cast iron.
The actual selection depends on the workpiece material, hardness, machining method, and required accuracy.
Q6. Can used tools be reground?
A6. Yes. Regrinding and cutting-edge restoration can be considered depending on the tool type and wear condition.
