【Request】
A sickle-shaped “special blade,” which was part of a manufacturing machine produced in Japan and used for many years, was damaged. Since the equipment manufacturer had discontinued production of the same model, the replacement part was no longer available. There were no drawings available, only the damaged actual part. The request was to reproduce it and manufacture the same part.

【Nagai Giken’s Response】
Because bending stainless steel from a square bar into the ideal angle would require considerable technical skill, time, and cost, Nagai Giken proposed machining the part from plate material instead of using square bar stock. However, because this was a completely original shape being created from scratch, a sample was produced before receiving the order, with the understanding that the experience gained would be an investment. When the sample was submitted, there were no problems with its quality or functionality, and it was adopted. Furthermore, by fundamentally changing the manufacturing method, the previous over-engineered design was simplified. A structure that had required highly skilled craftsmanship was improved into a specification that could be reproduced consistently. This also reduced the amount of work and burden involved as much as possible, making it possible to respond to additional orders with the shortest possible lead time.

By earning the customer’s trust through this project, Nagai Giken subsequently received an order for another project.

■　Case Study 2) Transport Conveyor

■ Client: Japanese manufacturer
■ Ordered item: Custom conveyor for transporting plastic containers

【Request】　　
The customer requested the manufacture of a belt conveyor for transporting plastic containers. They wanted to replace the conveyor currently in use because it was difficult to maintain.

【Nagai Giken’s Response】
Rubber belts repeatedly expand and contract, making them prone to deterioration. Nagai Giken improved its proprietary belt design so that the belt could be replaced more easily. The customer gave it a high evaluation after installation, and additional production has also been decided.

Proposing the Best Solution for Custom Products Unavailable as Off-the-Shelf Items

This project began with an inquiry from a trading company.
Conditions such as “no drawings available” and “fully custom-made” are often difficult to deal with, and the trading company representative was reportedly struggling to find a solution. At that point, Nagai Giken, which specializes in customized orders, was selected.

We consulted with Mr. Nagai and, while discussing the matter face-to-face, first had a sample produced.
They processed and created the part using a different method that was probably different from the original manufacturing method, and we were able to proceed all the way through to delivery. Needless to say, the client expressed their appreciation. That became the starting point for another order, and the products have also been used without any problems after delivery.
